(19.1 x 12.4 cm) London, British Library MS 263 Thomas Howard (1586-1646), second earl of Arundel, served as British ambassador to Holland, Germany, and Vienna, and spent his last years in Italy. During his travels abroad, he acquired a number of important manuscripts that would eventually become part of the holdings of the British Library, including this Leonardo codex. The bound volume of 283 folios, ranging in date from about 1480 to 1518, spans much of Leonardo's career. Assembled posthumously, it comprises a miscellaneous collection of treatises and notes, including a treatment of water.
